RoChess! openings and the 3,800+ claim

The official description says “3,800+ openings recognised as you play.” It does not attach a database export or a list of display names.

What “recognised as you play” can mean

A recognition feature usually watches the first moves and prints a name when the sequence matches a book line. That is an inference from the verb “recognised,” not a screenshot of the widget. I do not have an official image of the opening panel, so I am not describing its buttons.

Older guide sites in the research notes did not publish the 3,800 names either. If you see a name in game, the useful check is whether it matches a known line, not whether this page listed it first.

Lines worth knowing before the name pops up

These are standard names from the chess opening literature, not RoChess win rates. No public RoChess opening table exists, so there is no win-rate column.

  • Italian Game and the Two Knights lines start 1.e4 e5.
  • Sicilian Defence starts 1.e4 c5. It is a large family, not one position.
  • French Defence and Caro-Kann answer 1.e4 with 1...e6 or 1...c6.
  • Queen’s Gambit starts 1.d4 d5 2.c4.
  • King’s Indian and Nimzo-Indian are answers to 1.d4 when Black does not take on c4 early.

Wikipedia’s opening index is the reference for those names. RoChess may print a more specific ECO-style name, a shorter nickname, or nothing. I cannot say which.

Pair this with bots if you want slow games to see the label, and with rating once you play people.

Questions

Does RoChess have an opening trainer?

The description says openings are recognised as you play. It does not mention a separate trainer mode.

How many openings?

The official text says 3,800+. No file of names was public when we checked.

What is the best opening in RoChess?

There is no public win-rate table. A “best opening” ranking would be made up.

Will the name match Chess.com?

Often the underlying move order is the same. The display string is not documented, so a mismatch would not be surprising.
